'Setup' Link: 'Basics' Tab

The Basics tab allows for:

(Note that while the free custom search edition lists “Free, with ads”, as a member of an educational institution, ads may be removed from search results using the Business Settings.)

(Note the search engine ID will be used to configure the Drupal 7 Google CSE module.)

 

 

RENAMING THE GOOGLE CUSTOM SEARCH ENGINE

The name of the Google Custom Search Engine can be modified or changed using the Search engine name field.  Depending on individual settings, the name may appear on the search engine home and results pages.

 

PROVIDING A DESCRIPTION FOR THE GOOGLE CUSTOM SEARCH ENGINE

A brief description might include what the engine searches for and who may be interested in using it.  A description can be added, modified, or changed using the Search engine description field.

 

ADDING KEYWORDS TO DESCRIBE CONTENT MATTER

Keywords can help target results to the content of your website (Note the use of keywords may restrict results).  Good keywords should describe the topic of the search engine or the content of desired results.  Keywords may be entered in the Search engine keywords field.

 

UPGRADING TO GOOGLE SITE SEARCH (PAID VERSION)

(Note that while the Edition lists “Free, with ads”, as a member of an educational institution, ads may be removed from search results using the Business Settings.)

If you wish to upgrade to Google Site Search, click the Upgrade to Site Search (ads optional) button, enter the required information, and follow the instructions provided.

 

RETRIEVING THE SEARCH ENGINE ID, PUBLIC URL, AND HTML CODE

(Note the search engine ID will be used to configure the Drupal 7 Google CSE module.)

These options can be found to the right of the Details label.

  • The Search engine ID provides the unique identification number associated with the search engine.
  • The Public URL button allows for testing the engine before it is added to a site (in the dialog, ensure Enable Public URL is ON and click on The public URL of your search engine).
  • The Get code button provides the HTML code for using the engine on a static site.  The Search Results Details button also allows for changing the query parameter (the query parameter must always be set to query).

 

TOGGLING IMAGE SEARCH AND SPEECH INPUT

Image search allows for searching and returning results based on images. Speech Input enables the user to enter a query using speech. 

  • Image search can be turned ON or OFF using the toggle to the right of Image search.
  • Speech Input can be turned ON or OFF using the toggle to the right of Speech input.

 

SETTING THE LANGUAGE OF THE SEARCH ENGINE INTERFACE

The language of the search engine interface can be changed using the Language dropdown menu and selecting the desired language.  Content in the selected language will be given higher priority in search results.

 

SETTING TRANSLITERATION SETTINGS

Transliteration allows for the transcription of Romanized or English alphabet words into another writing system, such that the query is converted to its phonetic equivalent.  If more than one writing system is selected, a drop down list will appear beside the search box.

  • Select the Advanced link to the right of Language.
  • Use the toggle to turn transliteration ON or OFF.
  • When the toggle is set to ON, multiple languages can be selected from the Transliteration dropdown menu.

 

SETTING THE SEARCH ENGINE ENCODING

Search engine encoding sets the text format for the search results.  This setting must match the encoding of your webpage, which in most cases is UTF-8 (the default setting).

  • Select the Advanced link to the right of Language.
  • Select the necessary encoding from the Search engine encoding dropdown menu.

 

ADDING SITES TO SEARCH

  • Beneath Sites to search, click the Add button.
  • Using the links at the top of the dialog box, you can choose to include sites individually or in bulk.
    • To include sites individually, click the Include sites individually link (if necessary).
      • Enter the URL or URL pattern.
        • You can also select and apply a refinement Label, if already created.
        • Select from the options to include all pages containing the URL entered, include only the URL or URL pattern entered, or dynamically extract links from the page entered.
        • Click the Save button to save any changes.

 

  • To include sites in bulk, select the Include sites in bulk link.
    • Enter the list of sites to be searched, one on each line.
    • Select from the options to include all pages on the sites entered or only the specific pages entered.
    • Click the Save button to save any changes.

 

DELETING SITES TO SEARCH

Beneath Sites to search, select the site(s) you would like to remove from the engine and click the Delete button.

 

FILTERING SITES TO SEARCH

Applying a filter to the Custom Search engine will promote pages containing the specified URL.

  • Beneath Sites to search, click the Filter button.
  • Enter a URL pattern to filter for and click the Apply Filter button.

The specified filter also can be removed by clicking, first, the Filter button and, then, the Clear Filter button.

 

LABELING SITES TO SEARCH

Labels are the mechanism used to apply refinements to the Custom Search engine. Once one or more refinements have been created, sites can be labeled.

  • Beneath Sites to search, select the checkbox for the URL to be labeled.
  • From the Label dropdown menu, select the checkbox for the labels to be added or removed and click Apply.

 

ADDING SITES TO EXCLUDE

  • Beneath Sites to search click the Advanced link.
  • Beneath Sites to exclude, click the Add button.
  • Using the links at the top of the dialog box, you can choose to exclude sites individually or in bulk.
    • To exclude sites individually, click the Exclude sites individually link (if necessary).
      • Enter the URL or URL pattern.
      • Select from the options to exclude all pages containing the URL, exclude only the URL or URL pattern entered, or dynamically extract links from the page entered.
      • Click the Save button to save any changes.

 

  • To exclude sites in bulk, select the Exclude sites in bulk link.
    • Enter the list of sites to be excluded, one on each line.
    • Select from the options to exclude all pages on the sites entered or only the specific pages entered.
    • Click the Save button to save any changes.

 

DELETING SITES TO EXCLUDE

  • Beneath Sites to search click the Advanced link.
  • Beneath Sites to exclude, select the site(s) you would like to stop excluding and click the Delete button.

 

RESTRICTING PAGES USING SCHEMA.ORG TYPES

Pages from sites searched by the Google Custom Search engine can be restricted using Schema.org types (up to ten types may be added).  Enter the Schema.org types in the text field following the Restrict Pages using Schema.org Types description.  More information on Schema.org and associated types can be found here.
