Spinup Self-Service

Spinup Self-Service is a web portal providing on-demand creation and management of virtual servers, databases, and storage through providers such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Storage@Yale. Users have administrative control of their resources and are expected to do their own systems administration.

Features

  • Ease of use - Spinup has been designed to be easy to use. There is no need to learn about cloud platform specific processes, procedures and terminology.
  • Security - Spinup servers are behind the Yale enterprise firewall. No direct access from the internet means that malicious actors are not able to reach the servers.  Operating system patches are automatically and regularly applied.
  • Access to Yale services - Spinup servers are part of the Yale network, you can access services such as mail, Active Directory (AD) and Storage@Yale shares.  Also operating system  licenses are included under Yale’s enterprise agreements.
  • Networking - There is a dedicated network connecting Yale campus to cloud providers. This guarantees faster and private connectivity.  Spinup servers are assigned Yale IP addresses and are registered with Yale’s DNS.

Who can use it?

Faculty and staff storing low-risk data.

Individuals who plan to store moderate or high-risk data are ineligible to use Spinup at this time.  Efforts are underway to provide Spinup resources for sensitive (high-risk) data in the future.
