Configure your iPhone

Note: If you work with health information, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance may limit your choices for smartphones or mobile devices. In addition, your risk of a data breach will lessen significantly if you apply the breach prevention standards in place. For advice in choosing a device that meets your needs and will provide functionality to comply with applicable University policy contact your ITS support provider.

Before performing this procedure, Make sure that you have a strong cellular signal, and that WiFi is disabled.

Set up YaleConnect on iPhone v 3.x & 4.x software

Note: Configuring a YaleConnect account will also bring over your YaleConnect calendar data.

  1. From the main screen, touch the settings icon:
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Select Microsoft Exchange.
  4. Fill in the following information:
  • Email:
  • Domain: yale
  • username: enter your Yale NetID(*To get a \ character: tap the .?123 button on the keypad, then the #+button.)
  • Password: enter your Yale NetID password
  • Description: YaleConnect

Note: If you receive an error message "Unable to Verify Certificate", tap Accept and tap Next again. If prompted for an exchange server name: and tap next.

  1. Leave all three switches ON.
  2. The iPhone will automatically start to check any email on the server, including Calendar, Folders, and Contacts.

How to configure an IMAP account

  1. On the main iPhone display, touch the Settings icon.
  2. Choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Choose Add Account.
  4. Choose the account that you want to configure, and enter the email information and password for the account.
  5. To add a Yale IMAP account, choose Other, and enter the following information:
  1. Tap Enter
  2. The iPhone will try to locate the Yale server.
  3. If unsuccessful: tap IMAP to make sure it is highlighted, and enter the following information:
  • Incoming Mail Server: (central campus) or (medical campus)
  • username: Yale NetID
  • Password: NetID password
  • Outgoing SMTP Mail Server host name: (you MUST include this information - it is not optional)
  • username: Yale NetID
  • password: NetID password
  1. Tap Save.


Set security password

ITS recommends that all mobile devices at Yale be password protected.

  • Tap Settings > General > Passcode Lock.

  • Enter your password.

  • The iPhone will ask you to re-enter your password.

  • By default the screen will lock after one minute.

  • To change, tap, Require Passcode.
