You will receive regular CrashPlan Backup Report email notifications from Code42, the CrashPlan vendor regarding your backup status, see these instructions on how to change notifications. Code42. It is designed to automatically backup your data. The backup will include your files (documents, pictures, music), etc. It will not include your operating system, applications and Box, Google Drive and OneDrive.

Why should I backup my data?

Members of HIPAA covered components must be enrolled in the ITS backup service to be in compliance with Policy 5100.12

KEY REASONS TO USE A BACKUP SERVICE:

  • hard disks can crash
  • files and information can be deleted in error
  • computers can be stolen
  • viruses can erase or damage data

How do I request a backup account?

This service is available through the software library, http://www.yale.edu/software.  All staff and faculty are enrolled automatically

What is CrashPlan?

CrashPlan is a backup service provided by the vendor, Code42. It is designed to automatically backup your data. The backup will include your files (documents, pictures, music), etc. It will not include your operating system, applications and Box, Google Drive and OneDrive.

CrashPlan runs silently in the background, continuously protecting data created and stored on computers. CrashPlan backs up data automatically, with no user effort or intervention required, and enables quick and easy data restoring through self-service.

Do my files automatically get backed up?

Yes, CrashPlan provides continuous backup.

What is backed up and how many versions of my files are backed up?

The backup includes your files such as documents, pictures, and music. It will not include your operating system, applications and Box, Google Drive and OneDrive. All versions are backed up.

Can I backup my desktop and laptop?

Yes, CrashPlan supports up to four machines with a single NetID.

Note: If an attempt is made to add a fifth machine, CrashPlan will drop a prior machine.

Is it possible to backup other devices, IPAD, mobile devices?

No, only desktop and laptop operating systems are supported.

Can I backup my personal/home computer?

No.

Does CrashPlan work with an encrypted device such as Bitlocker and Filevault?

Bitlocker and Filevault full disk encryption (MAC OS 10.8+) are fully supported.

How do I know if my data is being backed up?

As part of the CrashPlan technology, you will receive automatic notifications about your current backup status every three days by default.

How do I view my backed up files?

After you’ve started backing up your files with CrashPlan, you may want to view your backup.  If you are familiar with how to access CrashPlan you can go directly to the instructions for viewing backup.  If you need to know how to launch CrashPlan, view the instructions for how to access CrashPlan.

Will I be alerted if my backup is not successful?

You will receive alerts and warning email notifications from Code42, letting you know if there is a problem with your backup.

Backup Status Report 3 days

Backup Warning Alert 3 days

You will receive a warning when your computer hasn't backed up (to any destination) for a specified number of days. The system default is set to (3 days).

Backup Critical Alert 7 days

You will receive an alert when your computer hasn't backed up (to any destination) for a specified number of days. Alerts are sent as a follow-up to a warning when the computer still hasn't backed up.

What To Do If You Get An Email Alert?

If you get an email alert telling you that one of your computers has not backed up in several days, first confirm that the computer is connected to the Internet and has not been turned off or asleep. If the computer is on and awake, you can troubleshoot the issue with this helpful guide.
