How to properly dispose of computers and other equipment
Old and unwanted computers and peripherals must be recycled:
Yale Environmental Health & Safety, through a secure electronics-recycling vendor, is now responsible for fully disposing of decommissioned Yale-owned electronic media and the associated hardware, which includes securely destroying the computer's hard drive.
To recycle computer equipment and other devices, please follow these instructions:
All electronic materials* should be recycled through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
Check the Office of General Counsel's Records Retention Schedule to ensure that any data which needs to be retained is moved to a centrally-managed location.
Backup any other important data to a centrally-managed server.
Fill out the Universal Waste/Used Electronics Form available from the Office of Environmental Health & Safety website. For additional information, call the Yale Environmental Affairs Waste Request Line at 203-432-6545.
Be certain to document any serial numbers or property tags before recycling the equipment - this information should be used to update the department inventory lists after the Office of Environmental Health and Safety collects the recycled equipment.
*Recycling for the VA:
Yale University and the VA (Veterans Administration) Hospital administration have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) stating that the VA Hospital will be responsible for properly disposing of all regulated material generated at the VA.This includes radioactive, hazardous, biomedical or universal wastes.
To request that used computers be removed from a work area at the VA, please contact Dave Ferguson at 203-932-5711, extension 3410.
