How do I setup DUO Multifactor Authentication options if I am travelling internationally?
You can register an international cell phone or international land line and link it to your DUO account as an alternate method of DUO authentication. The Duo mobile app also has options that will work even if you have no data plan, no texting plan, or no internet connection outside the country; to use these, you must link your app to your DUO account before traveling. We recommend that all individuals setup at least two DUO authentication options.
Note: The Duo Mobile App is not available for laptop or desktop computers
Note: You will need to link the Duo mobile app to your DUO account prior to leaving the country. The Duo mobile app can generate the required code anywhere in the world. It is as easy as a pushing a single button to get a temporary six-digit code that can be entered into the DUO prompt. If you don’t have any of the above devices, you will want to request a Duo hardware token by calling the ITS Help Desk at 203-432-9000. You will need to allow enough time to pick up the token at one of the ITS walk-in centers (https://its.yale.edu/help/walk-computer-support-centers). Note: Tokens must be picked up by the individual to which they are assigned.
If you already have the DUO mobile device setup on your phone, generate a temporary code by clicking on the app and clicking on the key symbol with the word Yale next to it. You can then enter this code on the DUO screen in the passcode area; the code must be used immediately and cannot be saved for a later use.
If your DUO automatically attempts to call or send a push to your device, you may need to disable the Automatic call or push options prior to travel, if you have previously enabled either.
On the next screen, click the ‘Add a new device’ option
Follow the steps on the screen:
If you are not sure if you have the app setup or if you do not have at least one device setup with DUO, please call the ITS Help Desk at 203-432-9000. The ITS Help Desk is available 24/7. Once you validate your identity over the phone, a technician will help you to verify your DUO settings and help you to setup a new DUO device. If you are traveling, you may also use SKYPE or a similar service to call the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
