Mailing Lists and Targeted Messaging

EliLists are Google Groups for EliApps, Yale's instance of Google's apps for education offering.  EliLists have list addresses that take the form listname@elilists.yale.edu.  Messages sent to an EliList generate an email as well as a topic post on the page for that particular EliList.  EliLists can be accessed at groups.bulldogs.yale.edu. Sharing permissions for documents in EliApps drive can also be easily managed through EliLists viz. documents shared with an EliList will automatically be shared with new members of an EliList when they are added to the list and removed when they are removed from the list.

Mailman lists are Yale's instance of GNU's open source Mailman software. Mailman lists serve as mailing lists with optional public or private archives and a robust set of customizable features.

Panlists are a Yale custom built mailing list platform. Panlists are a deprecated platform and no new panlists have been created since 2011. Yale ITS will continue to support existing panlists until all lists can be migrated, but users are encouraged to migrate from panlists to one of the other mailing list platforms in advance of the mandatory migration scheduled to begin in 2015.

Yale Messaging: Yale's Office of Public Affairs and Communications also offers messaging options geared toward announcement style emailing to members of the Yale community and to the public. For more information see the OPAC website

Who can use it?

EliList:

Anyone with an EliApps account can request and manage an EliList. Members of an EliList can include both Yale and non-Yale email addresses. Members without EliApps accounts can send messages to and receive messages from the list but they cannot view the list's archives in the "groups" view, change settings, add or remove members, approve messages, or otherwise administer EliLists. On request, Yale Connect users may request a non-email EliApps account (using the "Request this service" link at the top right of this page) so long as no PHI, HIPPA or FERPA covered data will be transmitted through the EliLists or stored in EliApps Drive.

Mailman list:

Anyone with a Yale netid and yale email address can request and manage a Mailman list. Members of a mailman list can include both Yale and non-Yale email addresses.

How much does it cost?

EliLists and Mailman lists are free for anyone with an active Yale affiliation and a Yale email address.
